Car Photography: A Passion I Enjoy Sharing

Toronto offers many interesting locations for automotive photography, from waterfront roads to modern architecture. I enjoy discovering new places where a car naturally becomes part of the landscape.

In the world of car photography, you will quickly realise that it’s not just about snapping pictures of shiny vehicles. It’s an art form that demands a unique blend of technical skills, creativity, and a deep understanding of cars themselves. Whether you’re capturing a sleek sports car or a rugged off-roader, the goal is to tell a story through your lens. Today, I want to share some insights and skills that have helped me grow as car photographer and how you can apply them to your own work.

Learning the Basics

One of the first things I discovered is how important light is. Early morning or late afternoon usually provides soft, flattering light that brings out the lines of a vehicle.

I also like experimenting with different viewpoints. A low angle can make a car appear more dynamic, while close-up photographs of wheels, badges, headlights, or interiors often reveal interesting details.

Using a polarising filter is a game-changer. It reduces glare and reflections on the car’s surface, allowing the true colour and texture to shine through. Don’t forget to experiment with different angles. Shooting from a low angle can make the car look more powerful and dominant, while a high angle might highlight the design lines and roof details.
